For some people, the idea of learning a language online can sound a little strange or even scary. But as technology has become easier and cheaper to use, online learning has become more and more popular. And it is not surprising; there are so many benefits to learning a language online! Jo Gillan runs an online English school called English with Jo. According to Ms. Gillan, “Every person that I teach has their own unique reason for choosing online lessons.”
Soobin is a South Korean student living in China. She works in a very busy job and sometimes she does not get home until 10.00pm. It is too late for her to attend a class in person so she finds it very convenient to have lessons over the Internet.
Ben, a student in Germany, has chosen to learn English online because he is blind and a single-parent of two young children so it is very difficult for him to travel into town to attend a class in person. Online lessons are perfect for him.
Anya from Russia has very little free time before or after work, but she does get a one-hour lunch break, just enough time to have a lesson from her laptop!
Learning online is convenient. There is no traveling to get to a class, it is cheaper than taking a class in person, you get personal attention from a teacher, you can feel relaxed in the environment of your own home and you can take your lesson from anywhere in the world, even when you are on vacation!
Jo Gillan, owner of English with Jo, teaches using Skype because it is easy to use and she and her students can hear and see each other using a webcam. “It is very easy, we both have the same web page open on our computers so we are looking at the same information and then we talk to each on Skype, it is almost as though we are sitting in the same room together!” says Ms. Gillan. She adds that some students prefer not to use the webcam, which is also fine with her.
Robert is a student from Hungary learning English with Ms. Gillan. He says:
“Based on my experiences, learning English in a team course is not efficient because I can practice actively only in some parts of the time. At the same time, I was always too lazy to spend time with travelling to a personal teacher, even during the winter. Then I heard from one of my friends that learning English online, through the internet is a very good way. It is very convenient and can be done from my home without losing any value. Thanks to the direct video contact, the possibility to share any contents and to chat in written form during the conversation I think there is everything that I need. Only the Skype is required and a microphone. That’s it!”
